If you want to eat cheap and good duck, be sure to visit this place.  Nowhere else I think you can get a whole roasted duck for S$16!

The thing is this is a wholesaler, which means you can’t order duck rice to go and no half ducks for sale please. 

I also love their “char siew” (roasted pork) and “xiu yok” (roasted 3-layer fat pork). Not sure how much they charge (as I always get my dad to buy). But being a huge “char siew” fan, this one gets my thumbs up everytime I eat.

I will try to get you pictures of the duck & char siew before we hungrily attack them next time. 🙂

My parents and I visited their Far East Square outlet on Mother’s Day (11 May 2008).  Whenever we eat at an Indonesian restaurant, we never fail to order the tahu telor and the avocado dessert.  These to us are the representation of local Indonesian food.

We wanted to order the Petai Pedas but sadly they didn’t have it available.  So we ended up ordering the Kangkong Belachan (S$8.80), Tahu Telor (S$8.80), Ayam Bali (S$5.80 per piece; we ordered 2 pieces), Cumi Bali (S$13.50), 2 alpukat (S$4.20 each) and 1 chendol and of course, who can forget the rice!.

The food came pretty fast considering it was a lunch-time crowd and on top of that, Mother’s Day!  We barely had to wait for more than 15 minutes before the vegetables start arriving.

The level of spiciness in the food is indicated in their menu – 0 spoon means no chilli at all, 1 spoon means not that spicy, 2 spoons mean spicier, etc.

The first to arrive was the Kangkong Belachan.  This dish wasn’t too spicy (they only had 1 spoon) which is great coz you’ll have some people who can’t take spicy food.  Quite an ordinary dish.  I mean you really can’t go wrong with this dish unless you used really lousy belachan to fry the vegetables.

Next came the tahu telor (deep fried bean curd with egg).  Again another fail-safe dish.  The tahu (bean curd) is soft on the inside and a little bit crunchy on the outside (because of the egg).  Not spicy at all.  They poured a special sweet sauce over the tahu telor but you don’t really find it overwhelmingly sweet.  Wish they could make it a wee bit spicier so you can have the kick!

After a short while, the chicken and the squid arrived.  Both were cooked in the same style – bbq with a kind of sauce spread on top of the meat.  I find the chicken nice but it was a tad too sweet.  Too much of the sweet sauce!  Not so crunchy despite being bbq.  Tasted more fried rather than bbq.

I love the squid!  It was done just nice; you know if you overcooked the squid, it becomes too tough but this was perfect!  A bit on the sweet side but not as sweet as the chicken.  Pagi Sore also stuffed the tentacles inside the squid before bbq.  I don’t know if this made the squid a wee bit juicier but it was good.

The rice…. I love the rice too! Each portion was served wrapped in a banana leaf so that you get the nice fragrance when you unwrap the rice.  Somehow, you can never stop at just one portion.  Even small eater like me had 1.5! 😛  They charge you S$1.50 for unlimited servings of rice for each person, so if you are a huge rice eater, it’s really worth it.

The belachan… they charge you S$0.30 for each small plate of belachan so don’t be too happy and order as much belachan as you like, thinking it’s free.  The belachan is nice BUT not spicy at all!  You do get the taste of belachan but somehow, I would have much preferred it to be spicier.  No kick if it’s not spicy! However, if you love the belachan here, you can always buy it by the bottle – 230g for S$7 and 380g for S$10.

We had the alpukat (avocado dessert) which is nice but always too sweet!  Very thick and I wish they would go easy on the gula melaka (brown sugar) which makes the avocado too sweet.  Dad enjoyed his chendol – no bad comments so I guess it must be nice for him.  He has a sweet tooth so if you don’t, ask them to go easy on the sugar.

I must say that I am pretty impressed with the service here – very friendly!  Mom was even given a stalk of rose after the meal and as a Mother’s Day special, we were each given a bowl of dessert on the house.  It was a cold dessert – white fungus, wolfberry and 1 more item I can’t describe (we call it lian zhi but I can’t find the English word for it).  Nice but I liked better the one I tried before at Crystal Jade Shanghai Restaurant.

Overall, excellent service and good value for money.  We paid something like S$70 for the meal and we felt so stuffed thereafter.  Most importantly, my parents love the quality of the food.  A definitely will go again restaurant!

I personally tried the otah from the stall’s outlet at Kovan FC (can’t remember the date).  What I loved about its otah is that if you ordered the prawns otah, you actually get a few small pieces of prawns; and if you ordered the squid otah, you actually get a few small slices of squid inside your otah.  You get the idea. 

And you would think like you have to pay more than S$1 to get a stick of otah like this.  Well, you can get it at S$0.60!!  Excellent value for money!

They also have nasi lemak, assam fish, ikan bilis, chilli sauce, etc. for sale at their stall. If you want, you can ask them to cater for you or even cater the food for your BBQ.  Check their website for pricing details and order form.

This shop is famous for its egg tarts. 

They turned up in cute little cup-shaped pastry shells. It is filled with Hong Kong and Portuguese-style egg custard fillings. Each stood about 6 cm-tall and 4 cm-wide. The pastry was, as Mr Ewe said it should be, ‘crumbly and crispy’.

The filling isn’t as smooth as Tong Heng’s and is egg-ier to the bite, but ‘it suits this pastry and, very importantly, it is not as sweet as theirs’, said Mr Ewe, referring to the well-known Chinatown egg tarts.

Using a lot less sugar for the local palate was a main chapter of reference in his own makan sutra. It did very well.

The dainty laptop-toting office crowd around the Shenton Way area were buying in bulk for their in-house motivational talks at tea break (the motivation cost just $1.20 per tart).

The observant innovator, flushed with confidence from the response, began whipping up even more fashionable versions, like chocolate chip, banana, strawberry, chicken mushroom and even pepper chicken.

Now, sales of these tarts have overtaken Mr Ewe’s cookie sales and have become ‘our rice bowl’.

Today, a little over a year into business, he already has two outlets. It’s not difficult to realise why when the tarts are so easy to eat.

The crispy, crumbly pastry doesn’t fall apart when you chomp in. The various types of fillings have a firmer but still comfortable bite.

And it feels so cute between your fingers and tastes more like a quiche, especially the chicken and mushroom version.

Now, to keep at bay the soaring demand from these handmade tarts, Mr Ewe has a sign in the shop above the warm glass display shelf that says ‘due to overwhelming response, we are unable to take any pre-orders for this month’. It doesn’t say which month.

It’s timeless, and I hope Mr Ewe’s creations do not go the way of the roti boys, floss breads, bubble tea and soon, the psychedelic doughnuts.

This store is located directly behind NTUC Fairprice.  I was here on 24 November 2007.

This egg tart is different from the one from Tong Heng.  The crust here is more like a biscuit crust whereas Tong Heng is more flaky and pastry-like. The egg tart filling is less sweet and has more egg-y taste compared to Tong Heng.

I like the innovative tastes that are available at this store, e.g. blueberry, mushroom, melted chocolate etc. At S$1.20 per piece, go for it!

I managed to hunt down another cake shop that sells durian cake.  Only thing is that they deliver if you make purchases above S$100!

I’ve not tried their cakes but I find the prices pretty reasonable.  Can’t find a review on their cakes either. 😛

So guess you’ll have to try it yourself or wait for me to write my review. 😀

This popular taiwan street snacks can be found in most major shopping centres in Singapore.

My absolute favourites from here would be their XXL Crispy Chicken (fried and seasoned with salt, chilli powder, pepper and five spice powder. The skin is very crispy and is covered in the seasoning) and the Crispy Floss Egg Crepe.

Another popular item here would be their handmade oyster mee sua (noodle).  I’ve tried numerous times to get a taste of it but was unsuccessful.

Update on 10 March 2008:

After a 2-year hiatus from eating at Sakura, we finally made our way to the one at Clementi Woods on 10 March 2008.  How dining works here is that you pay at the counter on the 3rd level and then you will proceed to either Level 1 or 2  for your seating.  On your table, you will see some small clothes pins which has your table number printed on them.  These you can use to order some of the dishes that require some cooking time, eg. fried vegetables, seafood, satay, otah, squid, tau pok, etc. which will then be served to your table once it is ready, which basically saves you waiting time.  Excellent idea I must say!

First the price almost crushed us.  It used to be S$22 nett but now we have to pay S$24+ (which amounted to S$25.65) per person.

Then we were appalled by the drop in food quality and some of the missing good food such as the paper-pot steamboat with live prawns, frozen strawberry with stuffed yoghurt in it.

I ordered the dou miao with abalone and some bamboo shellfish with black pepper  – both were served cold, although they were prepared on the spot.  Portions are tiny – although this is alright with me as I can go for unlimited rounds.  But because quality is not good, I never went for seconds.

Another of my used-to-be favourite dessert was their durian cream puff.  Used-to-be favourite now because the pastry is hard and you can hardly taste the durian paste.  Thumbs down!

I’ve always skipped the dim sum, pizza and pasta corners because having tried them once, the quality was really bad even way back then.  I think it is unlikely that they have improved.

Skip the deep fried stuff at table no. 7 (refer to 1st storey food area map above).  Deep fried stuff must always be eaten hot – if it’s cold, it really tastes bad.

I also tried the oat prawns at table no. 13 – the prawns are not fresh and because the prawns had been deep fried earlier, the crunchiness was seriously lacking.

Sushi and Sashimi were still good – I had unlimited helpings of salmon & tuna.  You can also try their silverfish sashimi but my friend said it tasted a bit fishy, so I gave that a skip.  They also have other sushi – but I’m a bigger sashimi fan.  Standard here remains the same, although I noticed that there were more varieties of sushi available this time.  You can also have edamame (a green vegetable more commonly known as a soybean – usually boiled and lightly salted).

Another item that I love very much is the laksa (from table no. 5).  The gravy was thick and tasted great! It was served in small bowls but again, since this is a buffet, you can have as many bowls as you want.

You can also have free flow of beverages – soft drinks, green tea, brewed coffee, etc.  Also, do try the ice cream with the various toppings – great fun for the kids.

Unfortunately, I am very unlikely to visit this restaurant again – memories of good and cheap food that I had here are alas just a memory.  Still, for the price we paid and the varieties they serve, if you don’t mind quality but want quantity, you can always drop by this restaurant.  By the way, it’s halal so you can also invite your Muslim friends there.  But please note that not all Sakura restaurants are halal, so do check their website for details.
